• Essex Market, the new 37,000-sq.-ft. food hall in the Essex Crossing mixed-use development in the Lower East Side opened in the second quarter.  The market has 21 legacy vendors from the old Essex Street Market, 18 new stalls and two full-service restaurants.
  • Dean & DeLuca, the luxury supermarket that began in New York City in 1977, will close all but six stores.  Competition from other luxury supermarkets and new international ownership has pulled the chain into financial hardship.
  • Amazon’s Prime Day was a resounding success, with more sales over the two-day period than the previous Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined.  Over 175 million items were purchased by Prime members, while other retailers competed with similar discounts on stock.
